You need to lose 3500 calories to lose 1 pound.
That’s 500 calories a day you have to burn off and/or eat less to lose 1 pound per week. Don't try to do it all in one day. It's normal and reasonable to lose 1/2 to 2 pounds per week.

That certainly can sound overwhelming. The good news is that the reverse is also true - you must consume 3500 too many calories to gain a pound. That would be several days of serious overeating to see that 1 pound. (And you're not going to do that!) You can certainly mess up a day here or there and be OK because it won’t add up too quickly (just keep it in check). Those extra few pounds you see within a couple of days of poor eating are not permanent - yet - so don't panic. It's just extra food your body hasn't processed yet.
