Weight Loss Success Stories:
"Secrets" Exposed

Almost all the weight loss success stories you hear will have several of these common "secret" discoveries. If you just look at the headlines you'll see that these "secrets" are just general success principles and would apply to having success in any area of life or any accomplishment, not just weight loss. My comments about each principle, however, will relate to losing weight since that's what this site is about.

People who have lost weight successfully (I call them "Successful Losers") have embraced these success principles and used them to their advantage in their journey to lose weight and keep it off. You will have to understand and use these principles to your advantage too, if you want to join the circle of successful losers.

8 Principles Common to Almost All Weight Loss Success Stories

  • Successful ideas start with a "Eureka" moment.
This is a moment when something clicks inside you and you know right then that you are ready to do whatever it takes, for as long as it takes, to lose that extra weight. Eureka moments might come while trying on or shopping for clothes, an accidental glance in a mirror, etc.
  • Almost all successful pursuits have been attempted several times before getting it right.
Almost all successful losers have tried several (or more) times to lose weight. That's right! Having tried before is to your advantage. Think of it as practice. How many things have you ever done your best without practice?
  • Successful people learn from their previous failures rather than give up.
Every experience teaches you something. And people who succeed usually will tell you they learned MORE from their failures than from their successes. Learn from your weight loss failures. You now know some ways that don't work, so try something different. Keep trying until you find something that does work for you.

"I have not failed. I have just found 10,000 ways that won't work. If I find 10,000 ways something won't work, I haven't failed. I am not discouraged, because every wrong attempt discarded is another step forward."

As much as I appreciate flipping a switch and turning on a light, I'm certainly glad Thomas Edison didn't quit after one or two attempts. He was learning from every attempt (all 10,000 of them!) and applying what he learned until he figured it out.

  • Most ideas or projects will never reach full potential if the person behind it only wants to please the boss (or anyone else) - it has to be for themselves.
You must be losing weight for yourself - your own reasons. Successful losers know that losing weight for someone else doesn't work. You can't do this successfully if you're just trying to please your spouse, boyfriend, girlfriend, parents, or anyone else.
  • Successful people learn patience.
You will have to be patient with yourself. You're not perfect at keeping every decision? So what? Learn to be as patient with yourself as you would be with someone else. If you keep trying to make the right decision every time, you'll get it right often enough to make progress. How can you ever reach your goal if you lose patience and quit?
  • Successful people accept no excuses - from themselves or anyone else. If someone or something is in their way, they find a way around.
Failure is simply not an option. Remove the words "can't" and "try" from your vocabulary and just do it - whatever it takes, find a way. The passion and the drive takes over. It doesn't matter how long it takes, you will not give up.
  • After trying all the shortcuts, successful people roll up their sleeves and get to work.
You are done with "miracle weight loss" drugs or diets. There are no quick fixes that are real. Accept that you will be making lifelong changes.
  • Successful people simply never give up.
They may change the goal, they may change the path to getting there, they may change the tools they use, but they are driven to succeed and will not quit. You will need to learn this principle to become a successful loser. If what you're doing isn't working, find a different way, find new tools, but you cannot give up and quit if you truly want to succeed at losing weight.

Read those again... Do you notice anything? That's right, they don't tell you what to do or not do. They don't tell you what to eat or not eat. They don't even tell you to eat less and/or exercise more!

Weight loss success is not often achieved by being told what to do or what to eat. People create their own weight loss success stories by learning how to think successfully. They develop habits that get successful results. The actions required will always follow successful thinking and will always lead to success.

You can benefit from the weight loss success stories of others! The details are different - the reasons for weight gain, the ways they tried to lose weight before, their life circumstances, etc. - and so are yours. But the principles are the same that lead to success, especially long-term success.

The most common excuse for failure? "My circumstances are different." Of course they are! Your circumstances ARE different, but they're not THAT different! Your details are different, but the problem is the same (you want to lose weight) and the solution will be similar - but not the exact same. Don't use this common excuse! Find your similarities to others, ignore the details, and learn from their weight loss success stories to write your own.

I wrote my own weight loss success story - you can read about it here. I will share with you how I thought AND many of the things I did/didn't do and many of the things I ate/didn't eat. I'll give you the tips I used day-in and day-out to think my way to successful weight loss.
